Capacity Building Support for Federated States of Micronesia Coast Guard
The Japan Coast Guard has been providing capacity-building support to the Maritime Wing in the Federated States of Micronesia since FY 2023, through the framework of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, focusing on the fields of search and rescue and international law.
This time, the participation of coast guard agency personnels from Palau and Marshall Islands as observers provided an opportunity for multilateral cooperation.
During this dispatch, in addition to lectures and workshops on maritime international law, the Japan Coast Guard MCT conducted capacity-building activities in the search and rescue field, including basic ropework training and AED operation training. As a final exercise, a scenario-based maritime search and rescue training was conducted at sea, observed by the Japanese Ambassador to Micronesia and Officials from the U.S. and Australian governments.
Furthermore, courtesy calls were paid to the Secretary of Justice of Micronesia and the Japanese Ambassador to Micronesia. In addition, Japan, the U.S., Australia and Micronesia held a joint four-parties meeting to exchange views on capacity building support with a view to future coordination and collaboration.
The JCG will continue to strengthen cooperation and collaboration with the coast guard agencies of other countries to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, while also supporting capacity building for countries in the Indo-Pacific region.
